Hi Everyone! Welcome to the Riverwood Square Crochet Along Square Seven! I am so excited to be crocheting the Pedigo Square with you in our Riverwood Square Crochet Along Series.

You can find more of my crochet alongs over HERE

This modern crochet square pattern is designed with different stitches that give it its creative texture. A Riverwood Square should make you feel a sense of comfort every time you look at it! If you like to crochet easy block patterns with texture and simplicity this easy project is one you’ll love.

I designed these crochet square patterns with beginners in mind. They are easy to stitch up and have just enough balance to keep you on your toes.

Crochet afghan blocks can be joined together for many different projects. They can be turned into blankets for a cozy addition to your living room. These squares can also be used to create wall hangings, or throw pillows.

The Pedigo square is a like a transition square. When creating this crochet block we were in the transitioning phase from selling our home, deciding on building or purchasing another home with more land. This 10” afghan block really helped captured that transition.

This is an afghan block that is quick and easy to crochet. The stitches are simple enough to learn that even a confident beginner could crochet a blanket with them. You will need to know how to crochet in the 3rd loop, double crochet, and half-double crochet stitches, as well as crochet around the back post of a stitch.

On this project I used #4 worsted weight acrylic yarn because it’s readily available and doesn’t require a lot of special care. I want this to be a blanket you can use all the time, and not feel like it has to be for special occasions only. Yarn brands I recommend for this project include Red Heart Super Saver, Red Heart with Love, Hobby Lobby’s “I Love this Yarn”, and Vanna’s Choice.

The stitches in this modern square pattern are easy to crochet, but I have included detailed descriptions just in case you get stuck. Some of my free crochet square patterns even have tutorials on my YouTube Channel so head over there if you need help. Enjoy!

How to Crochet a Afghan Square

If you want to crochet this modern Pedigo square here’s what you’ll need to know:

REQUIREMENTS

Level of Difficulty

  • Beginner/Intermediate

Yarn

  • #4 worsted weight Red Heart Super Saver in Light Sage. 20 yards (roughly)
  • Want different colors? Use whatever your heart desires! You can use multiple colors, or a gradient of sorts.
  • Want to make this with a different weight of yarn? You can do that too. Just change your hook to the recommended hook size on the yarn’s label. If you decide to do this the weight of the yarn will determine how defined your stitches are.

Hooks and Notions

  • Hooks: I (5.5mm), scissors, tape measure and blunt yarn needle

Measurement

  • 9 inches across (Approximately)

Gauge

  • Using Red Heart Super Saver yarn: 17 dc = 4-inches (Round 7)

Abbreviations – US Terminology

  • Ch/chs = chain/chains
  • Sc = single crochet
  • Hdc = half double crochet
  • Sl st = slip stitch
  • Dc = double crochet
  • BP = back post
  • Hb-dc = herringbone double crochet

Pattern Notes

  • Chain 1 at beginning of round does NOT count as a stitch.
  • 1st Corner – work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in indicated stitch
  • 2nd Corner – work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in indicated stitch
  • Corner 3 – work (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in indicated stitch
  • You may use any size yarn and the recommended hook size. However, the weight of the yarn will dictate how defined your stitches are.
  • If your yarn suggests using an I hook, then that’s what you will use–UNLESS you crochet too tight or too loose. Then you will want to adjust your hook size accordingly.
  • Do you have tight tension? Try this tip: Because I am a tight crocheter I used the J (6mm) crochet hook to chain with, so the chain isn’t too tight. This will also keep it from buckling. If you crochet loosely then you really shouldn’t have to go up a hook size when chaining. Rule of thumb: always check your gauge.

Special Stitches

  • Herringbone Double Crochet (Hb dc): Yarn Over, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over, draw up a loop and through first loop on hook (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 1 loop, yarn over and drawn through both loops.
  • Sc in the 3rd Loop = With the front of the stitch facing you, look at the top of the stitch, and find the sideways “V”. Next, bend the stitch to look at the back, and you should see another “V”. You’ll be working into the back loop of that “V”, this is called the 3rd loop. When working in across, like you are in the square the 3rd loop should be facing you.
  • Hdc in 3rd Loop = With the front of the stitch facing you, look at the top of the stitch, and find the sideways “V”. Next, bend the stitch to look at the back, and you should see another “V”. You’ll be working into the back loop of that “V”, this is called the 3rd loop. When working in across, like you are in the square the 3rd loop should be facing you.
