If you are a crafter you are always looking for new, cute, reusable, and functional ways to store your yarn or at least I know I am. After doing some brainstorming and research I came across these Cute Recycling Yarn Storing Tips.

Yarn Storing Tips

Wooden Boxes on slanted toy bin rack

Yarn Storing Tips Free Pattern Roundup | American Crochet @americancrochet

Materials

Toy bin rack with bins (garage sale or toy store)

Wooden boxes or crates (optional)

Clean and paint the rack, if bins came with your rack clean them and get them ready for use.  If not, inexpensive crates or wooden boxes can be purchased at your local craft or hardware store.  Depending on the size of boxes full skeins of yarn or scraps can be stored.

Storage Jars

Materials

Canister or cookie Storage jars with lids

Drawer or door knob pulls (optional ~ purchase at hardware store)

Nail, metal punch or drill (to make hole in lid for knob if not one)

Paint (optional ~ colors for the lids)

Prepare lids by drilling or punching a hole in the center and attaching the knobs and paint.  Fill the jars with your balls of scrap yarn by color, fiber content, weights, etc. then display them on shelves for easy accessibility.

Utility Cart

Pick up one of these carts from your local store or thrift shop. Store your “right now” supplies in this cart.

Instructions

Be sure to clean cart first.

Organize your “right now” supplies and projects in the utility cart. (according to priority)
Repeat until everything is stored away to your desire

Suitcase

Materials Needed

Suitcase

Hole Punch (scrapbooking tool) or eyelet punch (sewing tool) and eyelets (if desired)

1/8 to ¼ inch round elastic approx. 1 yard

Super Glue or hot glue gun

1 inch foam mounting squares (quantity will depend on size of poster board)

If your suitcase does not have the fold down top panel cut a piece of heave poster board to the correct size and decorate the edges.  Take a punch or eyelet tool and punch holes in the poster board at the desired intervals.  Secure the elastic with glue on the back side of poster board pull through to the front side and back through to back and secure or run it up to the next hole and repeat.  Once all the elastic is secured attach the poster board to the inside lid of the suitcase with double sided foam mounting squares.  Fill and enjoy!

Sugar Shakers

Grab a few of these cool sugar shakers from your local store or restaurant supply store. These are great for small balls of yarn.

Materials
Sugar Shakers (as many as needed)
Little balls of scrap yarn

Instructions

Roll scrap balls of yarn. Then put the scrap balls of yarn into the sugar shakers then close lid.

Repeat until all scraps of yarn are organized

Clothes Pins

Pick up a few of these great clothes pins to help keep yarn tidy. Pick up these clothes pins at your local store. Create a functional and practical organizer for scrap yarn.

Materials
Clothes Pins (as many as needed)
Screw cup hooks

Instructions

Securing one end of yarn wrap remaining yarn around clothes pin. Put other end in the opening (this allows it to not unravel
Repeat until all scraps of yarn is organized

These can even be stored in a container, hanging storage organizer, show companion, etc..

Shoe Companion

Pick up one or more of these awesome shoes organizers at your local department store and create a functional and practical organizer.

Materials
Shoe organizer (depends on how much yarn you are storing)
Screw cup hooks

Instructions

Place cup hooks on back of door or wall (be sure to have parental permission)
Place yarn in each shoe compartment
Repeat until all balls of yarn are organized

Lidded Jars

Pick up a set at the grocery or thrift store and create a functional and decorative storage system.

Materials
Jar with metal lid (one for each color)
Roofing nail (or any large, thicker nail)

Instructions

Punch hole in jar lid using a nail and hammer, remove nail
Place yarn in jar and thread it through the hole
Repeat until all balls of yarn are stored

5 Tier Hanging Storage Organizer

Pick up one of these at your local toy store and organize a fun and functional storage system. This system keeps the yarn off the floor.

Materials
Stuffed Animal Holder (pick your color)
1 medium size cup hook (or an eye hook)

Instructions

Hang cup hook or eye hook in the designated spot (chosen by home owner)
Place the yarn in a stuffed animal holder
Repeat until all balls of yarn are stored

The next time you have a moment to crochet or craft with yarn, just grab the colors you want and avoid all the tangles!
