A Stitch That Connects – Introducing the Little Luminary Bonding Square
I’m so excited to share the Little Luminary Bonding Square with you today! This sweet little crochet square is designed to go hand-in-hand with the Little Luminary Hat and is part of the 2025 Preemie Crochet Challenge.
If you’ve never made bonding squares before, they are small squares that serve a big purpose. One square stays with the baby in the NICU while the other stays with the mom. When swapped, the baby smells the mom’s scent, and the mom can feel connected to her little one even when they can’t be together. It’s a powerful comfort during a very difficult time.
Why This Project Matters to Me
This project is especially close to my heart because my own daughter was a preemie. She was born six weeks early and had to stay in the NICU for a few weeks. It was such a difficult time being separated from her, and I wish I had something like bonding squares back then to help us feel connected.
Knowing that these squares can provide comfort to other moms and their babies makes this project deeply meaningful to me. Each stitch carries love, hope, and a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a difference.
I would love to see your projects in my Facebook Group and/or on Instagram!

Why Bonding Squares Matter
Bonding squares are more than just crochet projects—they’re a lifeline of comfort for preemies and their families. These small but meaningful pieces of fabric can:
- Support NICU families during stressful times.
- Help regulate a preemie’s emotions through the familiar scent of their mother.
- Offer mothers a tangible way to bond, even when they can’t physically hold their baby.
For many of us in the crochet community, creating for charity is one of the most rewarding experiences. These little squares carry with them more than yarn—they carry love, hope, and comfort in every stitch.
A Perfect Stash-Busting Project
Another wonderful thing about bonding squares is how practical they are to make. If you have leftover yarn from previous projects, these squares are the perfect way to put it to use! They don’t require much yarn, and they give you room to experiment with different colors and textures while still creating something deeply meaningful.
