- 284, 372, 500, 548 yards. #4 worsted weight Caron Simply Soft Party in Royal Sparkle (all yardages are based on 44” cowl)
Hook and Notions
- Size Hook: I/9 (5.5 mm) & J (6 mm), scissors, blunt needle and stitch markers (optional)
Measurement
- 6 (8, 10, 12) inches wide
- 3 (6, 9) foot long
Gauge
- 7 sets (4 puffs * 3 Cross Sts) in 4″
Abbreviations
- Ch = chain
- Dc = double crochet
- Sk = skip
- Sp = space
Pattern Notes
- Weigh your yarn cake: ________ grams
- Worked from side to side
284 (372, 500, 548) yards. I used #4 worsted weight Caron Simply Soft Party in Royal Sparkle (all yardages are based on 44” cowl)
Because I am a tight crocheter I used the I crochet hook to chain with, so the chain isn’t too tight. This will also keep it from buckling. If you crochet loosely then you really shouldn’t have to go up a hook size when chaining. Rule of thumb always check your gauge.
The cowl measures 8” wide x 44” long, before sewing together.
- Chain 4 at beginning of row counts as a dc and chain 1 unless otherwise stated.
- This cowl is made in 4 different widths. Image is displaying a 8” cowl that is 44” long.
Special Stitches
- Puff Stitch: (yarn over, pick up a loop in designated stitch) 3 times, yarn over, draw through all 7 loops on hook
- Cross Stitch: dc in designated stitch, crossing in front of dc just made, dc in last skipped stitch

ROYALLY SAPPHIRE COWL INSTRUCTIONS
Working with J hook
Using J hook, Ch 24
Row 1: Dc in 7th ch from hook, crossing in front of dc just made, dc in last skipped ch (cross stitch made), *ch 1, sk next ch, work Puff Stitch in next ch, ch 1, sk next 2 chs, dc in next ch, crossing in front of dc just made, dc in last skipped ch,* repeat from * across to last 2 chs, ch 1, sk next ch, dc in last ch. Turn (6 Cross Stitches, 5 Puff Stitches & 2 dc)
Row 2: Ch 4, work Cross Stitch in top of previous Cross Stitch, ch 1, *work Puff Stitch in previous Puff Stitch, ch 1, work Cross Stitch in previous Cross Stitch, ch 1,* repeat from * across, ending with 1 dc in 3rd ch of turning ch. Turn (6 Cross Stitches, 5 Puff Stitches & 2 dc)
Repeat Row 2 until it measures 44 inches long.
Fasted off, leaving long enough tail for sewing.
Joining Cowl
Match ends together. Using desired sewing method, sew ends of cowl together. (I used the mattress stitch method for sewing up my cowl).
