Flying Butterflies Poncho Crochet Pattern | Bestselling Open Lace Poncho

Some designs just have a life of their own — and the Flying Butterflies Poncho is one of them. From the moment I designed it for Yarnorama and the 2016 Hill Country Yarn Crawl, this open lace poncho captured makers’ hearts and never let go. It’s been my bestselling design ever since, and once you see it, you’ll understand why.

The sweeping, wing-like silhouette. The airy open lace stitch. The way it drapes over absolutely everything. This is the poncho that gets compliments every single time you wear it — and you’ll want to make it in every color.

About the Flying Butterflies Poncho

The Flying Butterflies Poncho was originally designed for Yarnorama and the 2016 Hill Country Yarn Crawl — a beloved Texas yarn event that brings makers together every year. From those Texas hills, this pattern has traveled to makers all over the world, and it continues to be one of the most-loved designs in the American Crochet collection.

Worked in DK weight yarn using basic crochet stitches, the poncho is assembled after crocheting to create its signature sweeping silhouette. One size fits most — finished size after assembly is 21″ deep x 25½” wide folded — making it a generous, wearable design that works beautifully on a wide range of body types.

The sample shown was made in Noro Tokonatsu (4 skeins, 137 yds/50g each) — a gorgeous blend of cotton, rayon/viscose, and silk that gives the poncho its signature drape. Another stunning version was worked in Juniper Moon Zooey DK (2 skeins). This pattern truly shines in any DK weight yarn you love.
