This precious My Dolly 18 inch doll crochet pattern series started with My Dolly Surf Song Convertible 3-in-1 – Poncho, Messy Bun hat, Beanie and continues with My Dolly Edgy Messy Bun Hat 2-in-1 for a lovely 18” doll. Because we can’t stop crocheting for the people we love, we will continue to build this adorable series so you can make special things for your collection.

Level of Difficulty – Beginner/ Intermediate
Yarn – Red Heart Super Saver, worsted weight, 50 yds – Heather
Hook and Notions – I/9 (5.5 mm), yarn needle and scissors
Pattern Notes – Worked from the bottom up. Chain counts as an hdc. Do not turn at the end of the row. A video is available for the 3rd loop. You may try to work with your hat right side in to get to the 3rd loop easily and turn it right side out when you get to the band. Here is the 3rd loop video showing how.

Measurements – Stretchy, Fits 13-½” circumference. 2.5” Diameter opening, 3.25” Messy Bun Length, 4” Beanie Length, 13” Circumference
Band – when lying flat and not stretched, band should measure 12 inches.
Gauge – HDC 2” = 6 stitches, 6 rows
Stitch Guide in American Terms:
Fhdc – foundation half double crochet
Hdc – half double crochet
HDC2TOG – half double crochet 2 together/ aka hdc decrease
Special Stitches –
FHDC – (Foundation Half Double Crochet) Chain 2, yarn over, insert hook into the first chain (2nd from hook), yarn over, pull up through the first loop on the hook (this is your first chain loop). With 3 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through 3. * Yarn over, insert your hook into the first chain loop, yarn over, pull up a loop (this is your second chain loop), yarn over, pull through 3. 2 FHDC completed. Repeat from * until you reach the desired number of FHDC.
3rd Loop – a.k.a. Back bump, back hump – In this pattern, it is the loop behind the stitch immediately following the back loop. Here’s a video showing where it is.

HDC2TOG – a.k.a. hdc decrease – With one loop on your hook, yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all 5 loops on hook. 1 HDC2TOG completed.

Instructions
Round 1: Fhdc 40, join with a slip stitch to form a loop.
Round 2: Chain 1, do not turn, start in the next stitch, working in the 3rd loop of each stitch, hdc in each stitch around, join with a slip stitch in the top of the chain to join. (40 hdc)
Rounds 3-7: Repeat round 2.
Round 8: Chain 1, HDC2TOG around; join with a slip stitch in beginning chain. (20 HDC2TOG)
Finishing a Messy Bun Hat: Slip stitch and weave in your ends.
Finishing a Beanie:
Round 9: Chain 1, HDC2TOG around; join with a slip stitch in beginning chain. (10 HDC2TOG)
Fastening off leaving a 6” long tail, weave the tail through the stitches of the last row and gently pull to cinch the top closed.
To make a pompom, I used the large Clover Pompom maker but you may use your fingers or a piece of cardboard to wind your yarn, tie, and cut.
